About Afriquilts

Afriquilts, started due to a hobby of mine – sewing and more specifically applique work and quilting. I had learned the techniques through a course I did and started making quilted wall hangings and bed quilts for myself and for gifts for family and friends.

A guest house bought one of my wall hangings for their entrance hall and I started getting orders for these wall hangings as well as bed quilts.

The wall hangings are made out of cotton and poly-cotton fabric so are washable. They are very ethnic in design and depict the diverse cultures in South Africa. They also depict the abundance of the wildlife found in South Africa. Each wall hanging/bed quilt is individually made and is unique. Each one receives a unique number which is embroidered on the reverse side.

The wall hangings are made with pockets on the top and bottom on the reverse side in order to insert a pole for hanging onto a bracket. The bed quilts include the same themes but are less detailed and do not contain buttons, beads etc as the wall hangings do as well as being less detailed.

Themes include: The Big 5, African Heritage, Rural Africa, Scatterlings of Africa. See Gallery page for an explanation of the various themes.

The Madiba shirts quilt was designed as a result of the many diverse colourful shirts that Nelson Mandela always wears and this wall hanging is particularly popular, especially that Madiba celebrated his 90th birthday recently.

Photographs of your trip to South Africa can also be included in your wall hanging/bedquilt. These however have to be ordered.

Stock will be available for immediate purchase, however if a specific theme or your photographs need to be included, the quilt will have to be ordered and posted to you. There will be an extra charge for shipping.
